AI Security 101: Mapping the AI Attack Surface

A practical guide to the risks, blind spots, and protections every security team needs to know.

AI is changing the way organizations build, ship, and interact with software. And with it comes a new security reality.

As more teams adopt generative AI, foundation models, and custom pipelines, they’re also introducing a broader, more complex attack surface. One that most security programs weren’t built to handle. That’s theAI attack surface, and understanding it is key to managing risk in today’s cloud environments.

At its core, the AI attack surface is the collection of all the ways an AI system can be exploited, spanning  across data, infrastructure, applications, and users.

It includes every component that interacts with or powers AI: training data, models, APIs, pipelines, and more. And because AI systems are often built and deployed rapidly, and with input from many different teams, the attack surface can grow quickly and unpredictably.

AI doesn’t replace traditional risks. It layers on top of them.

Security teams are still watching for exposed services, overly permissive identities, and unpatched systems. But with AI, new risks emerge: prompt injection, training data leakage, model poisoning, and untracked model usage. And these risks often stem from different parts of the organization, where security controls may not yet exist.

For example, an API endpoint exposing a model to end users can become a prompt injection vector. Or a shared storage bucket used for training data might accidentally leak sensitive information. These aren’t edge cases anymore. They’re becoming common.

To better understand what’s at stake, it helps to break the AI attack surface down into a few key components:

Training dataThe foundation of any model. If it includes sensitive or proprietary data, that information could be leaked or unintentionally memorized by the model.

Model artifactsTrained models themselves can leak secrets, behave unpredictably, or be reused in insecure ways if not handled carefully.

AI pipelinesTools like MLflow, SageMaker, or Vertex AI orchestrate the lifecycle of models and often come with complex configurations and elevated access.

APIs and interfacesMany AI models are exposed via APIs. Without proper safeguards, they can be susceptible to prompt injection or other manipulation techniques.

Shadow AIUntracked or unsanctioned use of AI services by developers, data scientists, or business teams can create blind spots for security.

Each of these layers opens new paths for exploitation, and many of them fall outside the traditional areas that security teams monitor.

These risks aren’t theoretical. They’ve already led to major incidents. A few recent examples stand out:

38TB of internal Microsoft data exposedWiz researchers uncovereda misconfigured SAS tokenthat led to the exposure of 38 terabytes of private data, including AI training files, internal documentation, and credentials.

BingBang prompt injection vulnerabilityIn another case, Wiz discoveredan issue in Bing’s AI featuresthat allowed attackers to manipulate the model's output, showing how prompt injection can be used to control public-facing AI systems.

Cloud-wide key compromiseThe Storm-0558 breachwasn’t AI-specific, but it revealed how sensitive infrastructure (like authentication keys) can be targeted to gain access across large-scale systems, including those that power AI.

Securing AI doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are a few practical starting points:

Map your environmentIdentify where AI is already being used — both formally and informally.Shadow AIis common, especially in fast-moving teams.

Secure your training dataAudit training sources for sensitive content, secrets, or personally identifiable information. Use access controls and logging to reduce exposure.

Harden your ML infrastructureApply the same rigor you would to production systems: limit permissions, monitor access, and scan configurations regularly.

Monitor AI endpointsLLM interfaces and APIs should be treated as sensitive entry points. Watch for abuse, unexpected behavior, or excessive permissions.

Build shared ownershipAI adoption is often cross-functional. Security, dev, cloud, and data teams all play a role in reducing risk. Make sure everyone is aligned.

As the AI attack surface expands, traditional security models are falling short. Most tools still look at risk in vertical silos: checking code, infrastructure, or runtime in isolation. ButAI riskdoesn’t work that way. It spans systems, teams, and layers.

Wiz takes a horizontal approach, giving you end-to-end visibility from code to runtime, across the entire AI lifecycle. We help you break down silos and build a unified picture of where risk lives and how it connects.

    Here’s how:

Discover what’s runningWiz automatically uncovers unmanaged models, APIs, and AI services across your cloud, including shadow AI spinning up outside of security’s view. With AI-BOM, you get a full inventory of what’s in use, by whom, and where.

Understand the full pictureRisk doesn’t live in isolation. The Wiz Security Graphties together AI-specific misconfigurations (like open training buckets or exposed endpoints) with the broader context of identity, data, and network risk. This means you can see how an attacker could move laterally.

Prioritize what matters mostInstead of alert fatigue, Wiz shows you the real attack paths that lead to impact, so you can focus on the few issues that matter, not the many that don’t.

Secure AI at scaleWith AI Security Posture Management (AI-SPM), Wiz brings governance and visibility to every part of your AI environment. That means you can secure everything from training data to production inference, without slowing teams down.

Wiz brings security out of the vertical stacks and into the flow of how modern teams build and deploy AI. It’s not about controlling every decision. It’s about giving teams the visibility and confidence to move fast, without flying blind.

AI is transforming how software is built. That includes the software we use to secure it.

The organizations that thrive will be the ones that treatAI securityas a shared responsibility and get ahead of the risks before they become headlines. With the right visibility, the right collaboration, and the right context, it’s possible to embrace AI safely.
